Nov 2008
Will try to answer a few of your
questions before I go to work on the boat this morning.
It is 22' long with a beam of @ 8'
when finished, the beam can vary a little depending
on how the gunnel gets done and that
depends on my mood and / or available materials.
The wood is MDO ( medium density
overlay ) or sign board as it's called because a lot
of sign builders use it. MDO is nice
because it has a paper like covering on one or both sides
that takes paint,polyester resin,epoxy
or almost any coating you want and starts out with a reasonably
smooth finish ( time saver ) and is
SUPPOSED to measure 3/4", 1/2" ( .75, .50 ), this batch of 3/4"
averaged .7317 inches. MDO also is
glued together with a very good WATER PROOF glue and this batch was
almost void free, it costs at this
time $60.00 a sheet. The cut time was 1:31:45 for the machine, a
process
that still amazes me while I watch,
the machine is computer operated and does malfunction. After doing my
best
to set it up for my first cut @ 5
minutes into the first sheet the electric company saw fit to drop a
power surge on the process!
Which means the computer has NO brains
and I had to re-zero everything. I have 19 hours time worked since
starting to cut
but things go slower now with each
frame needing to be beveled and getting whatever glued onto that needs
to be. The only change to the
Power Cat shape is the smoothing of
the bow curve, there are two reasons for this, (1) it is easier to bend
ply over this shape
and (2) this boat will be pushed by a
150 hp outboard jet and resistance is a little less, beside that my
friend who I'm building
it for likes the look. I am shooting
for @ 1000 lbs. for weight but it may be lighter as I found a way to
save 150 lbs.
by using a nida-core deck. If anybody
wants to build one I will be glad to cut one out for you, I could write
a lot more
but I'll send pics and descriptions as
I go, hope this answers a few questions.......David

Dec 2008
I just finished reassembling the boat
after applying two coats of MAS epoxy
to all of the frame pieces.
Finish looks rough and it is, I sanded
with
80 grit for a rougher surface and a better bond, my arms
feel like they
could fall off after all the sanding. I will start cutting out
skins
for hull tomorrow
and should be putting them together
next week if
nothing gets in the way. If anyone would like to do a
high performance
modification to an existing Power Cat I would be glad to do the
drawings and CAD files
on a as time permits basis. I can
either provide
files to cut from or patterns cut from a
lightweight material to use as
masters and am capable of cutting anything but metal. I wouldn't mind
cutting out the pieces if the shapes
and material can be done on the
ShopBot.

Returned from fishing
yesterday and had some time on my hands last
night
so I poped open a cool one and let my mind wander using the
wood
one to start with. Not a finished plan but just fun, at this age
dreaming of
driving something fast is almost as much fun as you know
what......
